A message from our Chief Executive

There are some fantastic opportunities and activities ahead of us in 2022.

We’ll be consulting on our Freight & Logistics Strategy, moving forward with the revise Strategic Transport Plan, and continuing the Investment Programme Benefits Analysis.

These key pieces of work will be vital in helping us set out our vision and ambitions and ensuring we are working towards shared goals that will help us build a new North.

Below is a round-up of the transport stories that were important to the North and our responses to announcements that aim to deliver on our vision of a more thriving region for our residents and businesses.

January 2021

Following the UK’s third national lockdown Transport for the North reconvened the North of England Contingency Group to help tailor and protect rail services for essential users during lockdown amid much lower levels of demand.

We also greed to write to the Transport Secretary to provide statutory advice on the Trans Pennine Strategic Road Studies, and started our search for a new Chief Executive to lead our organisation’s vision.

February 2021

We welcomed the news that Royal Assent has been granted to the HS2 Phase 2a Bill (West Midlands to Crewe).

We also launched our Northern Evidence Academic Forum to help transport investment decisions across the region.

March 2021

We issued our response to the interim findings of the Union Connectivity Review and praised the Hope Valley Line investment as a ‘major step forward’ for commuters between Manchester and Sheffield.

The release of the Bus Back Better Strategy was said to be “promising”, and rightly seeks to make buses more reliable, easier to use and better for the environment.

April 2021

Our work to provide the North’s passengers with better travel information has taken a leap forward thanks to leading journey-planning app Citymapper.

The North’s leaders also approved the appointment of Martin Tugwell as the next Chief Executive of Transport for the North.

May 2021

Northern leaders set out their bold Business Plan for renewal and recovery in the year ahead.

We also heralded the Williams-Shapps review of the railway as ‘a major national moment’ and a shift in how the wider rail network is run.

June 2021

We launched the our consultation into the first ever North of England decarbonisation strategy, while our Board called for a strengthened role overseeing the region’s railways.

Our Future Travel Scenarios work was also recognised by the CIHT, meaning Transport for the North won the Transport Planning Award for the second year in a row.

July 2021

We said the Government’s Transport Decarbonisation Strategy needs to translate aims into actions and also called for further commitments before a new rail timetable is agreed for the region.

July was also the month Martin Tugwell and Cllr Louise Gittins took up key leadership roles at the North’s statutory Sub-national Transport Body.

August 2021

A new report by Transport for the North revealed £21bn annual visitor spend across the region.

We also announced our Annual Conference which would host Northern leaders outlining the urgent need for investment.

September 2021

We set out the Northern Transport Charter to showcase how the region is best placed to shape its own future.

Polling commissioned by Transport for the North also showed the North is upbeat about the economy over the next year

October 2021

The pan-regional benefits of Northern Powerhouse Rail were revealed in new analysis, while leaders said to truly ‘build back better’ and ‘level up’ the North we need HS2 and NPR in full.

Our User Insight report revealed the importance of reliable and efficient transport for the North’s businesses.

November 2021

Leaders from across the North wrote to the Secretary of State for Transport, Grant Shapps MP, with our Statutory Advice following the publication of the Integrated Rail Plan.

We hosted a live press conference with leaders from across the region who spoke as one voice about a propose a way forward.
