“HS2 is a key piece of UK rail infrastructure which will connect together with the wider rail network, including Northern Powerhouse Rail to free up much-needed capacity in a system that is struggling to cope. Together with Northern Powerhouse Rail and other major rail enhancements it will help create the fast and efficient transit routes needed for sustained economic growth in the decades ahead. Without this level of connectivity the UK risks falling hostage to legacy infrastructure simply not fit for purpose in the modern world.”
Transport for the North’s new chief executive, Barry White, took up post on 10 January and has taken the first steps in leading the organisation in its most monumental year to date.
On Monday 15th January, The House of Commons approved regulations for Transport for the North to become the first Sub-national Transport Body in England. Following the successful approval from the House of Lords on the 18th December, this will come to force on 1st April 2018.
Civic and business leaders from across the North have come together to publish Transport for the North’s draft Strategic Transport Plan. The thirty year plan is the first of its kind and outlines how transport connections across the North of England need to be transformed by 2050 to drive growth and close the economic gap between the North and the rest of England.
