Transport for the North release new evidence to support EV infrastructure decisions

Alongside our 2024 EV State of Play report, we have launched updates to our Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure (EVCI) Framework. 

Our EVCI Framework provides a data-driven route map for electric charging infrastructure investment to support the transition to electric vehicles (EVs). This toolkit is, as far as possible, published openly in the public domain to guide public and private sector plans, strategies and delivery of EVCI. Further evidence and support are available to our Mayoral Combined Authority (MCA), Local Transport Authority (LTA) and national Government partners upon request. 

Here is a summary of enhancements now available…. 

National roll out of the EVCI Framework 

We have completed the roll out of the EVCI Framework across England, working with the other six sub-national transport bodies (STBs). Supported by the Department of Transport (DfT), this Framework is now freely available to all constituent local authority partners across England. By working together, we are providing a consistent and publicly operated source of intelligence.   

STBs are working with partners to support the planning and delivery of EV charging across our regions. Our regional forums enable collaboration and partnerships; provide advice to government and other national agencies; and enable greater “systems thinking” when it comes to delivery.  

What’s new for our users in the North of England? 

With thanks to our regional EV forum partners, Arcadis and Ordnance Survey, the following updates are now available:  

• User improvements – improved the navigation and more accessible data downloads
• Monitoring deployment against required charging infrastructure – integration of Zap Map data to enhance progress evaluation, and provision of additional data direct to our local authority partners.
• Driveway availability mapping – The ability to charge at home has a significant effect on the EV transition. Partnering with Ordnance Survey, we have mapped driveway availability for the 6.4 million residences across the north of England. More specific household level data is available to our partner authorities.
• Assessment of energy capacity to support charging demand – highlighting expected pinch points for electricity grid reinforcement and increased capacity needs to support the energy demand to help inform decisions about decision electricity supply needs, so with our energy sector partners we can target priority areas for action ahead of time.
• Commercial viability assessment (provided to public sector partners only) – an assessment of investment and revenue potential across our region to inform local decisions and commercial deployment activities.
• Local Charging Hub focus – an additional scenario to identify charging needs, which sees user behavioural change towards use of local charging hubs.
• Utilisation and queuing impacts – utilisation data from across our partnership has been applied to keep the EVCI Framework up to date. An additional behaviour scenario captures the impact of users accepting an element of queuing for a charge, as we do for combustion engines today, to shape sustainable investment decisions. 

What’s next? 

We will continue providing support to our MCA and LTA partners, and working with regional and national Government and agencies to shape and support delivery. Working with our regional EV forum, we are exploring further spatial, energy, digital and transport related developments and integrations into our EVCI Framework for the North of England.
