Freight and Logistics in the North East

Friday 5th April 2024

Katie Day (Strategy Director and Deputy Chief Executive), Donna Newsome (Principal Policy & Strategy Officer) and Owen Wilson (Head of Major Roads) visited on the North’s most important ports this week, as they met with the dedicated team at PD Ports in Teesside…

Transport for the North’s Strategic Transport Plan sets out three ambitions: growing the economy, decarbonising surface transport and reducing social exclusion.

A sustainable freight and logistics sector is essential to the North’s economy – and our evidence suggests the sector could be worth more than £30billion by 2050 and employ more than 500,000 people.

And critical to moving freight domestically and internationally are our Northern Ports.

Thanks to Geoff, Jo and Luke and the team for welcoming us to PD Ports in Middlesbrough this week to show us how the port has changed and diversified in recent years. We discussed how better connectivity can unlock more opportunities for the region, and what could help move more freight from road to rail – in line with the ambitions in our Strategic Transport Plan for mode shift.

Listening and engaging with businesses first hand is fundamental to inform our evidence base, and enable delivery of the Strategic Transport Plan. And we’ve got more engagement planned over the coming months to make sure we have a strong voice in our work and advice to government.

Watch out for our new business plan, due to be published shortly for more details on our priorities for the year ahead.

Together we can, and we will, transform the North!
