Sheffield City Region | Transport for the North

Famous for being an industrial city – with its roots in steel – the areas of Barnsley, Sheffield, Doncaster and Rotherham have ambitious plans to transform transport and road links over the next two decades. By 2040, the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority plans to support economic growth with improved transport connections.

We are supporting the widening of the A630 Sheffield Parkway, the £27million Supertram track renewal (phase 2) and the new £180 million rail link and station at Doncaster Sheffield Airport. This scheme has been rejected by Government and revised proposals are now being considered.

National Roads Fund

We’ve worked with South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (formerly Sheffield City Region) to submit a bid for funding for Shalesmoor Gateway.

If supported by the National Roads Fund, this scheme would improve junctions and widen the carriageway, and also provide walking and cycling spaces.

Did you know?

When you think of Sheffield, you probably picture an industrial city, but it’s actually one of the greenest cities in the UK – due to a third of the city being inside the Peak District National Park. In fact, there are more than two million trees, which is the highest ratio of trees to people for any city in Europe!
Sheffield could have become home to the UK’s first monorail network back in 1973 – meaning the city would have had two miles of electrified tracks and driverless carriages!
At three and a half miles long, The Totley Tunnel, which runs between Totley and Grindleford, is one of the longest railway tunnels in the country.
The famous Flying Scotsman was actually built in Doncaster in 1922-3 and it’s also the birthplace of the toilet thanks to Thorne born Thomas Crapper.
The steel used to make the iconic Brooklyn Bridge in New York was forged in Sheffield.
