Transport for the North’s new chief executive, Barry White, took up post on 10 January and has taken the first steps in leading the organisation in its most monumental year to date.
Barry is at the forefront of Transport for the North as it builds on the momentum of the Strategic Transport Plan launch which took place on 16 January, and as the organisation continues its efforts to become England’s first Sub-national Transport Body from April.

“On my first day in post, 10 January, the House of Commons voted overwhelmingly in favour of Transport for the North becoming the first Sub-national Transport Body. This support endorses Transport for the North’s vision of a thriving North of England, where modern transport connections drive economic growth and support an excellent quality of life.
“The team at Transport for the North and its Partners has worked tirelessly to produce a 30-year transformational Plan for transport investment in the North of England. The Strategic Transport Plan will call for sustained prioritised investment in the region’s railways and roads over a 30-year period, with the aim of transforming the economy by improving the way both people and goods travel around the North of England.

Barry joins Transport for the North with a wealth of experience in delivering major investment programmes. He joins from his role as Chief Executive at Scottish Futures Trust where he led the organisation in improving the planning and delivery of infrastructure investment and asset management in Scotland.
He has also held a number of challenging high profile private sector roles including being the Managing Director of BAM’s UK infrastructure investment company and as a Director of Skanska Infrastructure Development.
