How to build a high speed North – why rail investment is needed to futureproof the North’s economy

Tuesday 8th December 2020

Northern leaders will gather virtually for our Annual Conference on Monday, December 14, where the importance of investment in the North will be debated.

The High Speed North debate will focus on the vision to transform the North’s economy through a new high speed rail network.

Amongst the speakers will be Mayor of Liverpool City Region Steve Rotheram and Doug Oakervee, who led the HS2 review earlier this year. Together with Northern Powerhouse Rail director Tim Wood, Lorna Pimlott (HS2) and Hannah Miller, Political Correspondent from Granada Reports – the leaders will discuss why HS2 and Northern Powerhouse Rail (NPR) are essential to rebuild and transform for North’s economy.

The benefits of investment in high-speed rail lines have already been heavily reported – and the session will cover how investment in northern rail projects, including Northern Powerhouse Rail, HS2 Phase 2b and the TransPennine Route Upgrade, will be delivered.

The speakers will also highlight the importance of the Government’s support for Northern Powerhouse Rail – and the need for the Integrated Rail Plan.

The debate around how and when the North gets high speed rail connections will be part of a wider day of informative discussions during the #TfN2020 conference.
