Responding to comments by Lord Jim O’Neill in the Northern Powerhouse Partnership’s devolution agenda, Transport for the North’s Chief Executive Barry White, said:
“It is vital that the Government’s levelling-up agenda delivers for the North and aids our economic recovery.
“As well as securing a long-term pipeline of investment, we also need greater devolution of investment decisions.
“Working together through Transport for the North, our leaders have consistently shown they can take significant decisions about what infrastructure the North needs – with a clear, joint vision in the interest of passengers and communities.”
The Case for Devolution document states it is the NPP’s view “that levelling-up can only be achieved if a significant number of policy areas are taken from Whitehall”.
It calls for more powers to be placed in the hands of directly-elected Mayors and those who will be elected to represent those areas still waiting for devolution.
