Transport for the North’s Rail & Roads Director & Deputy Chief Executive, Darren Oldham to step down from the role in May

Wednesday 20th March 2024

The lead officer for Rail and Roads at the North’s sub-national transport body will leave in May 2024 to take a step back following a 30-year career in transport planning.

A process to appoint a successor will begin shortly, with an update on progress to be made in due course.

To aid a smooth transition, Katie Day, our Director for Strategy, Analysis and Communications, will take on the additional role as deputy chief executive from 1 April.

Lord Mcloughlin, Chairman of Transport for the North, said:

“Darren has decided to leave the role of Road and Rail Director this spring. We thank him for his leadership, contribution in his time at TfN. We all wish him the very best for the future.”

Darren Oldham, Rail & Roads Director, said:

“It has been an honour and a privilege to serve the people of the North of England and work so closely with the political and business leaders of the North to build a better-connected transport network.

“But I believe the time is right for me to move on. I have worked in transport planning now for 30 years, and I’d like to take a slight step back to reassess and pursue new opportunities.

“I have really enjoyed my time at TfN, and I am immensely proud of the dedicated Strategic Rail, Major Roads and legal teams I lead, and I know they will continue to carry forward the mission of creating a better-connected North of England for future generations to come.”
