An industrious region with a prolific history in maritime and the railway. The city is also prosperous for creative minds, music lovers, and culture addicts – the Capital of Pop, where house music began and still thrives. With more museums and galleries than any other place in the UK and coastline and green space within just a few minutes of the city centre.

Planned Transport Investment for Liverpool

As part of our efforts to support the region, we are pushing for £460 million to enable 52 new trains to run on the Merseyrail network with level boarding from all platforms, making Liverpool a more accessible city. Further investment includes £41.4 million to fund 64 sustainable transport enhancement schemes, and new Mersey ferries, as well as investment in the Key Route Network and corridor-based improvements to the bus network.

National Roads Fund

We’ve worked with Liverpool City Region to submit a bid for funding for upgrading the Rocket Junction.

If supported by the National Roads Fund, this scheme would make a significant difference to those travelling into Liverpool thanks to a reconfigured layout.

Did you know?

It’s the LOR! Liverpool Overhead Railway. It holds numerous World Firsts: Elevated electric railway, automatic signalling, electric colour light signals, lightweight multiple units and was the first stations to have passenger escalators. Opened in 1893 it ran 11 km along the Liverpool docks delivering, at its peak, 20 million passengers a year.

Liverpool holds the Guinness Book of Records title for being the Capital of Pop – more Liverpool artists have had a number one hit than any other town or city.

When the Liverpool and Manchester Railway opened in September 1830 it set many firsts, including the first railway to rely exclusively on steam power locomotives, the first to have a signalling system, and the first to carry mail.

The footprints of an archosaur, a creature related to the ancestors of crocodiles, can be seen at Christ Church in Higher Bebington. They were found in sandstone at Storeton Quarry in 1838.

Arthur Wynne, the journalist who invented the crossword, was a Scouser.
